The world's fourth oldest ballet company, Royal Swedish Ballet perform in London for the first time since 1995 . To celebrate their 240th anniversary, Johannes Ohman, the director of the Royal Swedish Ballet commissioned renowned choreographer Mats Ek to create a full length adaptation of a timeless love story for 32 of the company's dancers.
Having created many new interpretations of classics, Ek's Juliet & Romeo attracted much acclaim both in Sweden and internationally. Making its UK premiere this Autumn , Ek brings a quirky twist to this much loved ballet.
Juliet & Romeo is set to a score by Tchaikovsky-rather than the more traditional Prokofiev-adapted and arranged by Anders Hogstedt. This new adaptation features a scenography and custome design by Magdalena Aberg. The Renaissance inspired costumes are given a modern twist, while the dark, urban setting helps bring this classic love story into the 21st Century.
Pairing a contemporary aesthetic with dynamic choreography and Linus Fellbom's atmospheric light design, Ek places this romantic tale in a brutal environment strewn with conflict between characters and generations.
