The comic – wearing a black jacket with satin lapels – told the audience at the charity show: “The protocol is that at the end of the show we all line up and meet the queen – and I’m going to be standing next to James Blunt.

“No offence, but James was in the Royal Horse Guards and so they have got a lot more to talk about. He can talk about horses and I’ll just be standing there. I can’t very well say, ‘James may have protected you – but I am S***ger of the Year.’ And I’m not suggesting a demo, clearly!”

The cheeky 32-year-old said he is always respectful of the queen, adding: “When I lick a stamp, I always close my eyes!”

Russell also revealed he has got a soft spot for another royal, the queen’s 26-year-old granddaughter, Zara Phillips.

He said: “I have been thinking about Zara an awful lot lately. I was wondering if she is single, that’s all. There would be a courtship of course – and then probably a court martial.”

The show featured performances from Bon Jovi, Seal, Michael Ball and opera
singer Paul Potts. It will be broadcast on Britain’s ITV1 on Sunday (09.12.07).
