The camp comedian — who met the queen at The Royal Variety Performance last week — has joked that she flirted with him backstage at Liverpool’s Empire Theatre.

Russell quipped: “When I met the queen she said, ‘You know what a fellow once broke into my bedroom, if you keep your wits about you, there IS a way in.’ And I said, ‘Ma’am, I’ll be right over!’”

The former sex and drug addict also insisted that meeting the British monarch had almost converted his anarchic political opinions.

Speaking at the world premiere of his new film St. Trinian’s in London last night (10.12.07) he said: “It was lovely to meet the queen. I love the queen now.

“I am a revolutionary and do believe, if we should have a democracy, it should be a direct democracy and not a representative democracy and that we shouldn’t have a head of state. But I do love the queen.”
