Accompanied by her husband Prince Philip, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke of York and Princess Alexander, the Honourable Lady Ogilvy, the monarch was welcomed by a band playing the National Anthem.

She then walked among the 8,000 guests lined up in the garden of the palace, speaking to some of them and smiling throughout.

After an hour of greeting guests, the queen – wearing an attractive lilac outfit complete with an electric blue hat – made her way to the tea tent where she enjoyed refreshments.

Harry Smith, a 23-year-old student, was one of the lucky people who were fortunate enough to speak to the queen during the event.

He said: “It was quite daunting, I didn’t know I was going to be in the line up until this morning!”
