The princess joined the Harrods boss for week at his St Tropez villa, in the south of France, in July 1997, where she began a relationship with Mohamed’s son Dodi Fayed.

But police were concerned abut the welfare of Diana’s son and the future king Prince William, who joined his mother on the trip, as Al Fayed was then at the centre of a criminal probe for an alleged theft.

Former royal protection chief Dai Davies told the jury at London’s High Court: “I was concerned for the reputation of the future king of England.”

Diana was told of the concerns but went ahead with the trip, taking her other son Prince Harry with her as well. During the holiday Diana and Dodi were pictured kissing on the beach, sparking a huge interest in their relationship.

However, just weeks later, they were both killed in a Paris car crash on August 31st 1997.

Al Fayed has always maintained the couple were murdered by the British establishment because they were about to announce their engagement and Diana was pregnant.

However, many people who were close to the princess have told the inquest she had no plans to marry Dodi as she was still in love with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, who she had split with in June 1997.
