The 25-year-old royal – who caused controversy when he landed in girlfriend Kate Middleton’s garden during a flight training session last weekend – flew the UKP30million aircraft over the Cumbrian Lake District and enjoyed a mock battle with an RAF Harrier jump jet.

While most of the flight was at a steady 15,000ft, at one point the Tornado dropped suddenly to 250ft to simulate an attack on a bridge as part of the battle.

After emerging from the plane following the flight, William told ground crew: “That was awesome – the most amazing experience of m life.”

A Royal Air Force spokesman said: “Prince William experienced first hand the combat teeth of the RAF, which you just cannot get from a book. His flight gave him a clear understanding of the complexities and demands of flying the RAF’s fast jet aircraft on the frontline.”

Earlier this week, it was admitted the prince had been “naive” after using the training sessions to fly to Kate’s garden and cousin Peter Phillips’ stag weekend in the Isle of Wight.
