The event is being held to raise money for a surgical ward at Oxford Children’s Hospital, in honour of Tom Waley-Cohen, a close friend of Kate’s – the girlfriend of Prince William.

Kate was left devastated following Tom’s death in 2004 and has been heavily involved in many fund raising projects aimed at raising £1million to have a ward named after him at the hospital but tonight’s event is her most ambitious project yet.

Co-organiser Sam Waley-Cohen – Tom’s brother – praised Kate’s efforts.

He said: “Kate and Tom were at school together and were good friends. It is the first time she has been actively involved but she has supported us behind the scenes.

“When we came up with this, she was the obvious person to help. Kate has been fantastic in using her contacts to get people along – she has persuaded loads of people to commit. Her involvement has obviously raised the profile.”

Explaining the decision to hold a roller disco, Sam added: “We wanted to raise money but not with something to formal.

“Because it is in aid of a children’s ward we thought it should be something fun. It’s a nice way of remembering Tom.”

The event, to be held at London’s Renaissance Rooms, will also raise money for Place2Be, a charity which provides counselling to school children in need.
