The 82-year-old royal had an hour-long meeting with 62-year-old Helen in an within the royal enclosure at the world-famous horseracing event in Berkshire, south-east England.

A source said: “Dame Helen visited following the Gold Cup trophy ceremony, which the queen always presents. She left the box shortly after 5pm and looked extremely happy – I think they enjoyed each other’s company.”

This wasn’t the first opportunity Dame Helen had to meet the queen.

In 2006, she revealed she had turned down an invite for tea at Buckingham Palace to continue filming in the US, adding: “Buckingham Palace said they understood but I do wonder if I have blotted my copybook.”

Also yesterday, the queen foiled betters by wearing a blue hat at Ladies’ Day, after they assumed she would be wearing a red hat.

Bookies were forced to suspend betting after a flurry of bets that the monarch would be wearing a red headpiece, fearing a repeat of the event three years ago when royal courtiers were accused of leaking information that the queen would be wearing brown to fix bets.

A spokesman for betting agency Paddy Power said: “The punters may be feeling blue this time around but we bookies are tipping our tifters to Her Majesty for her keeping the colour under her hat.”
