The royal laughed and joked with the youngsters at the WellChild Children’s Heath Awards in London, which marked the bravery of some of the UK’s most severely ill children.

The prince, 24, managed to persuade four-year-old brain tumour sufferer Lily Slater to sit with him after she initially seemed too shy.

He said: “Come and sit on my lap, please, please.”

Harry – who earlier this week revealed he wants to become a helicopter pilot – also chatted with five-year-old Harvey Fleming, who suffers from a chronic lung condition.

The prince – who is patron of the charity – told Harvey’s foster mother Paula: “He seems so happy and full of life.”

Paula added: “He has been so excited about meeting Prince Harry. The prince was lovely – he was brilliant with the children.”

The royal returned from a 1,000-mile charity motorbike trek across South Africa just hours before the engagement.

He teased the youngsters – who soon warmed to the royal – when they began making faces and poking their tongues out at photographers.

He told them: “Now you are just showing off.”
