The future king tasted the 56 per cent drink at the Penderyn distillery, where he opened a new UKP850,000 visitor centre on the last day of his tour of Wales.

When Dr. Jim Swan, the drink’s creator, told Charles its strength, the prince remarked: “Now you tell me!”

He added: “It is remarkable… superb. You don’t find many like that.”

Charles was then given one of only three bottles of the special edition Madeira cask-produced whisky to be made.

Before entering the new visitor centre, Charles was presented with a bouquet of roses for his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, by Halle Rose Roberts, two, although she quickly asked for them back.

Halle’s aunt, Jennifer Williams, said: “Halle said she needed to see Prince Charles today. She gave him flowers but then she asked for them back!”

During the tour of the centre, Charles spotted a picture of himself taken at the distillery four years ago when the product first went on sale on St David’s Day.

He remarked: “I seem to have spent my life in distilleries!”
