The princess joined 51,360 people touring the showground at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, where she met pony breeders, farmers and livestock show men.

In an opening address to the crowd, she said: “I must congratulate everyone on making this one of the most – if not the most – successful show in Europe.”

The show society then presented Anne with three Buff Orpington chickens – two hens and a cockerel – much to her delight, as she keeps poultry.

Show president Trebor Edwards said: “This is a very special day for me. I am very honoured the Princess Royal has agreed to attend the show.”

Before the show opened, £182,000 had already been raised by this year’s Royal Welsh host counties in North East Wales with more expected to be raised during the show itself.

Trebor – who performed a hymn concert in the sheep shearing sheds – is donating £2 for every copy of his new album bought at Llanelwedd.
