LONDON UNDERGROUND could face shut down next month, after the RMT union said it will ballot for strike action over plans to slash 800 Tube jobs.

Transport for London admit that station staff are set to bear the brunt of those job losses, a plan RMT leader Bob Crowe says will endanger passengers.

“We have already warned that the cuts that are being planned by TfL will turn Tube stations into a muggers’ paradise,” said Crowe, before accusing TfL of bringing in the cuts on the sly:

“We now have concrete evidence that the company are speeding up the process and are already leaving stations unstaffed, or babysat with just one member of staff, without any consultation,” he said.

The timetable for the vote among RMT’s 10,000 affected members has yet to be finalised, but is likely to held over the next fortnight, with strike action following soon after.
