If you’re shopping in Oxford Street today, don’t plan to drive there between 4pm and 8pm. The Sugababes are taking over to switch on the street’s world-famous Christmas lights.

At 6.17pm, Keisha Buchanan, Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah will brighten the area from a stage at House of Fraser. Evening entertainment will start at 5pm and will include performances by X Factor finalists and the Babes themselves.

McFly switched on the Regent Street Christmas lights last Thursday, and Kelly Brook is set to do the Bond Street honours on 20 November.

Plenty of other lighting ceremonies are scheduled for the coming weeks, including events at Carnaby Street tomorrow, at Marylebone High Street on 19 November and at Trafalgar Square on 4 December.

This comes after Father Christmas drew a huge crowd to the Harrods Christmas Grotto on 1 November. More than 70,000 children booked visits for Santa’s 100th-annual appearance there.

With all the winter festivities around the corner, here’s hoping the holiday spirit can warm up the fragile economy.
