Following on from it’s triumphant night at the BAFTAs, the Mumbai based film has ten nominations including Best Picture and Best Director, slightly behind fellow favourite The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. If Slumdog does collect a clutch of statuettes it will join a rarified group of fellow Brit flicks such as Chariots of Fire and The Full Monty that achieved the ultimate Hollywood nod.

Rupert Gavin, CEO of Odeon Cinemas, told Sky News that winning Best Picture could be worth £9million for the producers of Slumdog, which has already grossed £21million in the UK. “If you get the winner and it’s a British winner it really helps the box office. That would mean it’ll probably be in the top five films in this country for this year, literally coming from nowhere.”

Other British interest will be for the only UK actor in the frame; Kate Winslett, nominated for Best Actress for her role in The Reader.
