RYANAIR is to charge £1 to use the toilet on its flights and plans to bump up its fee for luggage from £15 to £20 a case.

When the budget airline first came up with the idea of charging for the loo last year, most saw it as a publicity-seeking joke, but the airline has confirmed it is in talks with aircraft-maker Boeing to fit coin-operated cubicles.

“By charging for the toilets, we are hoping to change passenger behaviour so that they use the bathroom before or after the flight,” says Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara.

“That will enable us to remove two out of three of the toilets and make way for at least six extra seats on board.”

The removal of those toilets would leave a typical Ryanair aeroplane with one facility between 189 people.

Meanwhile, Ryanair is to put up its baggage charge for the summer months of July and August by £5, though the rise will fall back to its original level in September.

“We are determined to incentivise passengers to travel light this summer by increasing our checked-in baggage fees for the months of July and August only,” said McNamara.

“Over 70 per cent of all Ryanair passengers will be unaffected by these changes because they travel with no checked-in bags.”
