Among the Diana-dresses brought out of the royal wardrobes are the shoulderless black taffeta gown worn by the tragic princess in 1981; and the pink and purple sari-style dress that got a run out on a 1988 trip to Thailand.

“Diana has been a key figure here since the early 80s,” said Deirdre Murphy, curator of Diana: Glimpses of a Modern Princess.

“We have carefully selected this collection of exquisite dresses to illustrate to visitors Diana’s evolving style and the important role fashion played in creating her public image.”

Other exhibitions planned for Kensington Palace over the coming weeks include Victoria Revealed – a look into the life of the 19th century Empress – and Uncover the Secrets of the Royal Court at Kensington Palace, which takes a peak at courtly life under the Stuart and Hanover monarchies.

Kensington Palace re-opens next Monday, 26 March. You can get tickets via LondonNet here.

Prince William and Kate Middleton, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, are due to move into one of the palace’s apartments next year.
