POLICE have turned to the public to help them catch the gang behind this weekend’s jewellery heist at the Royal Exchange shopping mall.

“We need the assistance of the public in tracing the car used, the criminals involved and the items stolen,” said Detective Chief Inspector Steven Chandler, of the City of London police.
The car has been identified as a red BMW and the items stolen will probably be known once officers and staff from the De Beer and Omega shops have done a full stock take, but the identity of the raiders is likely to prove a tougher nut to crack.
“We are currently following a number of lines of inquiry and I can reassure the public that every effort is and will be directed to bringing those responsible to justice,” said Chandler.
On the face of it this jewellery job looks to be at the less sophisticated end of the criminal scale.
At 10pm on Saturday a group of robbers somehow forced their way into the back entrance of the upmarket Royal Exchange, located near the Bank of England, made for the De Beer and Omega outlets and used sledgehammers to smash open cases containing expensive jewellery.
