PAUL WELLER has taken his new role of God in his stride.

The Modfather is to be handed the prestigious Godlike Genius accolade at the NME Awards later this month, but rather than visit famine and pestilence on the sinful world, plans a moment of quiet reflection around his gaff.

“I shall find a special place for [the award],” he said, “a little altar to myself with garlands of flowers around it.”

“I don’t feel godlike or a genius but I’m happy to have it.”

Weller joins a phalanx of music Gods such as The Clash and New Order on Mount Olympus, but his new job in the heavens won’t stop him keeping his feet on the ground.

“It’s nice to be recognised, but you get your rewards in other ways too,” he said, “like playing live and seeing people’s reactions.”

The Shock wave NME Awards 2010 takes place on 24 February at the Brixton Academy. His Holiness is back in the limelight in May, for a series of concerts at the Royal Albert Hall.Weller
