QUEEN of pop Madonna has written to the Queen of Britain to ask for permission to make a film about Wallis Simpson, the American socialite whose marriage to King Edward VIII caused a scandal in the 1930s.

“Madonna sees Wallis Simpson as her next big project,” a friend of the singer told The Sun. “She is as passionate about it as she was about playing Eva Peron in Evita.”

As when she played the Argentine leader, Madonna is reckoned to see close parallels between Simpson’s life and her own.

“Madonna said she is fascinated about this American commoner who refused to conform or offer explanations for her tangled love life,” the friend said.

Both have a brassy image and both married British upper crust types, albeit Simpson bagged a king and Madonna a director of dodgy gangster movies.

No word yet on the Queen’s reply to Madonna’s letter, but the fact permission was asked raises the question of why the singer didn’t ask the Pope for the thumbs up to belt out all those Catholic-themed songs, such as Like a Virgin and Just Like a Prayer.
