KING’S CROSS, Leicester Square and Oxford Circus are among the first 80 Tube stations that will be enabled for free wi-fi this summer, Transport for London has announced.

“The first stations include some of our busiest and most well-known destinations and we’re on track for a successful launch this summer, all delivered at no additional cost to fare-payers or taxpayers,” said Gareth Powell, Strategy Director at London Underground.
LU’s wi-fi involves “no additional cost” thanks to a deal with Virgin, under which the media giant is also to install its own travel information screens throughout the network.
Though the 80 named stations (see below) will provide free internet access from the end of July until the end of September when the Paralympics closes, from then on there is to be a browsing charge introduced, ready for when another 40 stations are added to the wi-fi list.
Eventually, the plan is for the whole Undergound system will have wi-fi access on its stations and in its ticket halls, but as for Tube trains themselves: cost considerations have pushed that little dream well into the future.
