CCTV cameras are on every high street in London, there are plans to use camera-wielding airborne drones to police the Olympics and now the capital’s refuse collectors are to be filmed as they work.

Enterprise, the company that deals with rubbish in The City, has kitted out its fleet of bin wagons with cameras to keep an eye on refuse collectors as they work.

“This equipment provides us with a month’s worth of recording so we can monitor our teams to make sure they are working in a safe manner,” said David Martin of Enterprise.

“If there are any incidents we can find out exactly what happened.”

Estimates vary as there is no requirement to register CCTV cameras, but it is thought that London has more electronic spies on the street than any other city in the world.

“Within London we have probably the largest network of CCTV cameras anywhere in the world,” said security expert Tobias Feakin.

“I mean, just walking down Whitehall, I will be filmed approximately 300 times per day – by different cameras.”
