Now packed with more architectural curves, tonnes of new granite and a water feature for the famous Shakespeare statue, the square is ready to host the hundreds of thousands of 2012 Games visitors likely to make it their summer social base.

“Central London deserves a state-of-the-art cultural destination, particularly in this Olympic year, and we hope Londoners and visitors alike will be impressed with the results,” said Robert Davies of Westminster City Council.

London Mayor Boris Johnson also declared himself impressed with the results of the revamp.

“This fantastic makeover is an integral part of the legacy that London 2012 will bring, creating a must-see destination for the thousands of people who visit each day,” he said.

Parts of the square have been closed for a year and half and to commemorate the re-opening there will be four days of free entertainment including free screenings and meet-and-greet sessions with characters from current movies such as Top Cat and Ice Age 4, plus special performances based on scenes from musicals Chicago and Mamma Mia!.
