BIG BEN has double reason to celebrate this week.

First, the famous bells were re-activated after seven weeks out of action due to repair work and, second, artist Michelle Reader has created an amazing wheat likeness of the tower.

Reader’s sculpture is part of British Food Fortnight and represents London and the south-east under the national ‘Land of Wheat and Glory’ banner.

Other regions have their own wheat-based artworks, including representations of the Angel of the North, Edinburgh castle and Mount Snowdon, but the Big Ben model was chosen as the overall national winner.

“Wheat has proven a malleable material,” said Reader. “Working with a material grown by British farmers seemed befitting to transform such an iconic British landmark as Big Ben.”

British Food Fortnight runs until the end of this week, 7 October, and is sponsored by Shredded Wheat.
