The full gamut of Shakespeare’s plays will be staged in a variety of languages at the Globe during the festival, which stretches from 23 April to 9 September 2012, while other leading London venues, such as the Barbican, the National Theatre and the Roundhouse, will also play a major part in proceedings.
Featuring theatre companies from around the world and many other venues throughout the UK, the festival is set to be the biggest Shakespeare party of all-time.
It is also one of the major events of the Cultural Olympiad, which aims to bring a touch of art and culture to the 2012 London Olympics.
The winning idea behind the 2012 Games was London as a world city and the theatre people keep to this script, festival director Deborah Shaw calling Shakespeare the “world’s playwright”.
Some 70 productions will be staged featuring over 7,000 performers and production staff. Some of the big names involved include Nicholas Hytner, Toni Morrison, Jonathan Price and Meera Sya.
Tickets – over a million of them – go on sale on 10 October. Ticket news here.
