Palestinian refugee Fahed has seen many of the people he loves die during the hostilities. He sells cigarettes in 1982 Beirut and has a lifelong friend in a spaniel called Churchill. Israeli fighter pilot Yoni is shot down and captured by Palestinians including Fahed, who has been raised to hate the captive. Over time the boy forges a surprisingly tender bond with Yoni and they plot a daring escape so that Yoni can help Fahed to realise his dreams.
