Muzamil is born in a Sufi village situated between the Blue and White Nile in Sudan. At his baptism, a sheik proclaims that Muzamil die at the age of 20. The boy's mother Sakina heeds the prophecy and becomes overly protective, compelling Muzamil to remain in the village where she can keep an eye on him. Neighbours cruelly taunt Muzamil, christening him the "son of death", and he isolates himself from his community.
