Touko Laaksonen serves with distinction in the Finnish army during the Second World War. He returns home and remains in the closet so as not to arouse the suspicions of his homophobic younger sister, Kaija. They live together and also work at the same advertising agency, where Touko is employed as an illustrator. The work is unedifying and Touko keeps his creative juices flowing by secretly sketching homoerotic depictions of muscular men.
