Unable to come to terms with his father’s death in the war, youngster Angus MacMorrow feels disconnected from his sister Kirstie and mother Anne, who works as housekeeper at a lakeside mansion. During a regular sortie to the beach, Angus stumbles upon a giant egg, which he hides from his mother, keeping it warm in an outhouse where it hatches to reveal a cute, amphibious creature. As the hatchling gains in size and strength, Angus struggles to keep the creature hidden from his family and from handyman Lewis.
