Pretty shop girl Genevieve and garage mechanic Guy fall in love in the town of Cherbourg at the time of the Algerian War. The evening before he is due to leave for the front line, the lovers enjoy a passionate night together which results in Genevieve falling pregnant. While her beloved is away, Genevieve is persuaded by her disapproving mother to turn her back on love and settle for a comfortable life with wealthy Parisian jeweller Roland Cassard.
