Prospera is usurped by her ambitious brother Antonio and cohort King Alonso of Naples, and she is abandoned at sea in a boat with her daughter Miranda. Left for dead with only meagre food and water supplies, the pair drifts for days, eventually landing on a remote island. Prospera vows revenge and she studies her books to learn the art of magic, luring Antonio, Alonso and their entourage close to the island where she shipwrecks them, knowing they will swim ashore.
