Kindergarten teacher Lisa Spinelli has a strained relationship with her husband Grant and two children Josh and Lainie. To add to Lisa’s sense of dissatisfaction, her efforts at writing poetry fail to impress Simon, the teacher of a weekly class for aspiring scribes. In one of these classes, Lisa recites a poem composed by one of her students, a bright little boy called Jimmy Roy. Simon gives the words a glowing reception and Lisa realises that Jimmy is a prodigy in need of nurturing.
