Miss Giddens is hired as a governess to children Flora and Miles on a large country estate. Concerned by the bizarre behaviour of her young wards, Miss Giddens soon suspects that the children are in the thrall of the ghosts that haunt the enormous house. She fears that the spirits of cruel groundsman Quint and the previous governess Miss Jessel are possessing the youngsters in order to continue their former life.
Winter falls in 1945. Mathilde Beaulieu is an idealistic French medic working with the Red Cross to tend injured civilians and troops alongside smitten physician, Samuel. She is called away from the bustling medical centre to a remote convent where Mathilde is shocked to discover that several of the nuns are pregnant. The Reverend Mother and her assistant Maria reluctantly disclose that Soviet soldiers stormed the building and raped the holy women.
