The Fallen Idol (PG)

Another chance to enjoy Carol Reed's 1948 thriller based on a story by Graham Greene, in which eight-year-old Phil becomes an observer to illicit meetings between his parents' butler Baines and secretary Julie during a rare weekend home alone. Baines swears the lad to secrecy, hoping to keep the adulterous liaison secret from his wife, Mrs Baines, who is the family's housekeeper. The boy agrees, only to be tricked by Mrs Baines into disclosing the shocking truth. She retaliates with a secret plan of her own, pretending to go away for a few days whilst, in fact, spying on her unfaithful spouse.
