Poor Irish immigrant Daniel Dillon, his wife Elena and baby daughter Hope search for a better life upon the goldfields of 1840s California. Fuelled by his lust for gold, Dillon sells his wife and child to prospector Donald Dalglish in exchange for a gold claim. Twenty years later, Dalglish, Elena and the teenage Hope return to the pioneer settlement where Dillon is now a wealthy man with a mistress.
