Gifted violinist Anna Bronsky is a teacher at a prestigious Berlin conservatoire, where she moulds young virtuosos into the stars of the future. Her dedication to her instrument puts a strain on her marriage to husband Philippe and creates friction with her 10-year-old son Jonas, who is a student at the school. When teenager Alexander auditions for a place at the conservatoire, Anna has the casting vote and she pledges to personally train this raw talent for an examination.
