Born in Indiana in 1930, Steve McQueen was one of the big screen’s most popular leading men. At the height of his fame, he used his star power to make the action drama Le Mans directed by Lee H Katzin. Actual footage of the gruelling 24-hour endurance event was incorporated into the film but Katzin’s picture failed to rev the engines of cinema audiences. This documentary revisit that inglorious period in McQueen’s career, tracing the history of the doomed project.
