During the Chinese depression of 1946, Liyan and his loyal wife Yuwen retire to what remains of their decimated community. He is confined to the house and she dutifully tends to his every need, as well as looking after his energetic young sister Xiu. Springtime arrives early in the village when Liyan’s childhood pal Zhang Zhichen comes for a visit. Now a doctor, Zhichen helps Liyan to rediscover his spark and brings happiness back into Yuwen’s menial existence.
