Yaoyun and wife Liyun raise a young son Xingxing. When Liyun falls pregnant again, she is compelled to comply with state policy. Subsequently, Xingxing drowns in a reservoir while swimming with his best friend Haohao. Guilt slowly eats away at Haohao's parents, Yingming and Haiyan, who forced Liyun to have the abortion. Over time, Yaoyun and Liyun adopt a boy in the hope the child can salve their wounds but the new Xingxing is belligerent and runs away from home.
