A close-knit community in northern France is stunned when the headless body of a young woman is discovered inside the corpse of a cow. Commandant Van der Weyden leads the investigation and the police officer takes an immediate dislike to an angry and confused young boy called Quinquin, who is loitering near the crime scene with his friends including Eve, the girl he is trying to impress. The case twists and turns, and the number of dead bodies stacks up at the mortuary.
