Tommo Peaceful lives in the tranquil village of Iddesleigh with his mother Hazel and older brothers Charlie and Big Joe. Young Tommo develops a crush on spirited local girl Molly Monks but she seems to prefer the attention of Charlie and when Molly falls pregnant with his brother’s child, Tommo nurses a broken heart by enlisting in the army to fight in the First World War. Charlie follows and does his best to protect weakling Tommo from the constant goading of sadistic Sergeant Hanley.
