A young soldier called Joseph witnesses the horrors of Waterloo. He is one of the lucky few to stagger from the blood-soaked battlefield and limps home to Manchester to the comforting embrace of his mother, Nellie. The lad is deeply scarred by his experiences, exhibiting all the signs of post-traumatic stress disorder as loved ones cluck and fuss around him. Meanwhile, Joseph's father Joshua joins the throng, who are enraged that Parliament has refused to extend voting rights to workers.
