As a girl, Papusza defies the strict rules of her family to learn to read and write by exchanging stolen livestock for literacy lessons with a Jewish storekeeper. She is subsequently married to her step-uncle, Dionizy. Many years later, Papusza meets travelling poet Jerzy Ficowski and he becomes intoxicated by the songs that Papusza performs around the campfire. Ficowski encourages Papusza to commit the lyrics to paper and he publishes the verses.
