Fourteen-year-old orphan Mija lives in the mountains with her grandfather and her best friend Okja, a hulking six tonne piglet whose genetic make-up could well include hippopotamus given her size. Out of the blue, Lucy Mirando, the Machiavellian CEO of the company which created Okja, coldly and cruelly reclaims ownership of the animal. Plucky Mija is devastated but refuses to be separated from her porcine pet.
