As a boy, Kurt Barnert is deeply affected by his free-spirited aunt Elisabeth, who encourages him to “never look away” from the beauty in life including her own naked body. Her behaviour causes concern and Elisabeth is taken to the Dresden women’s clinic where SS doctor Carl Seeband signs the order for her forced sterilisation. The medic is subsequently arrested but he curries favour with a Russian officer after the war, who agrees to conceal Carl’s involvement with the Nazis.
