At the tender age of four, rebellious tyke Fang Qiangqiang is sent away to a boarding school in 1950s Beijing, run by the imperious Principal Kong, whose staff includes the kind and gentle Miss Tang and the ferocious and strict Miss Li. Children at the school earn symbolic rewards – little red flowers – through good behaviour but Fang’s conduct is far from exemplary. He constantly clashes with authority, and when he begins to spread rumours about Miss Li, a showdown between teacher and pupil seems inevitable.
