Philippe is the level-headed captain of a fire barracks, which is on red alert throughout the sweltering summer to deal with numerous fires, some set deliberately. Chief warrant officer Benedicte Meursault joins this close-knit band of brothers and she gets a baptism of fire at the scene of a horrific car crash. In the heat of the moment, Benedicte overlooks one of the victims and the badly injured man drifts into a coma. Benedicte is crippled with guilt and considers retiring from the force.
