Budding artist Suzu spends her formative years with her younger sister Sumi and parents in a cottage on the outskirts of Hiroshima. Creative passions are repeatedly extinguished to honour Suzu's duties as a daughter and she agrees to marry a kind man called Shusaku. They move to the naval port of Kure, where Suzu meets the demands of being a housewife while encountering resistance from her sister-in-law, Keiko.
