Ten-year-old Michele lives with his parents and younger sister Maria in a tiny village in southern Italy. A game of dare with some friends leads Michele to an old farmhouse where he makes a terrifying discovery: a boy called Filippo shackled in a dark pit. Overcoming his initial shock, Michele befriends the boy, taking him food and water so he might survive his strange ordeal. When it transpires that Michele’s own father may be involved in Filippo’s fate, he orchestrates a daring escape bid.
