Don Rumata is a scientist from Earth, who has travelled to the planet Arkanar, which is similar to the third rock from the sun except the inhabitants are 800 years behind our advancement. Posing as a nobleman in this crude, ancient civilisation, Don Rumata must merely observe the ebb and flow of everyday life – he is not allowed to change the course of Arkanar’s history. However, he and other scientists are permitted to plant the seeds of ideas in the minds of selected individuals on the sister planet.
