Fortunata is the matriarch of a deeply religious Sicilian family, including her son Salvatore Mancuso and grandsons Angelo and Pietro. Against Fortunata’s counsel, Salvatore decides that the family’s fortune lies in America and so he packs up their worldly belongings and boards a ship from the coast, bound for Ellis Island.
